Exercise Your Elasticity

Life is full of expectations; they are what keep us moving forward. But I don't know anyone who hasn't been disappointed a time or ten, or who's been lucky enough to have their expectations met every single time. That's the way it goes. Relationships, events, jobs, people will let you down. Your dreams will be dashed, your hopes crushed. You will be disappointed, and you'll be heartbroken. Such is life; it doesn't always show up on time, and it's almost never dressed appropriately. But you have to learn to take it in stride. You can't fall apart with every...

Why Can’t You Be More Like a Zebra?

If you've never read the book Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky, I recommend that you pick up a copy. Its contents may be a bit scary (ironically so), but the research presented is very compelling. In the book, Sapolsky discusses why humans have so many health problems related to stress compared to animals, and how this can be attributed to the physiological stress-response commonly referred to as "fight-or-flight" syndrome. The stress-response is activated in animals only when they are at risk of "acute physical crises"—serious physical injury, predators, starvation—whereas in humans, the response is activated far more...

The Worst They Can Do Is Say No

Most of us would agree that one of our number one fears is the fear of rejection. It often presents itself in a different light: fear of taking risks, making a change, asking a favor, asking for a raise or promotion, etc. But it's not the actual act of doing these things that we're afraid of; it's the possible outcome of rejection. What if they say no? We'll feel uncomfortable, embarrassed, silly, exposed. So we avoid asking the question at all. We let time go on, opportunities pass us by, and fear hold us in place. Not too long...

Leisured: An Opportunity to Take Stock

I've been getting my own test in moving beyond the fear these past two months. In mid-November, I quit my job for a different life; a life which consisted of more freedom, more time, and more writing—part of which is writing to you folks here on BTF. Well, that lasted about a month and a half (which, with the holidays, didn't seem like more than a week) before I received a punch to the stomach that I never expected: last week, my husband Sean was laid off from his job of eight years. It was a complete shock. Sure,...

Before Facebook, There Was Conversation

"We expect more from technology and less from each other." The words were spoken by Sherry Turkle at aTED Talk she gave in 2012. Her topic was on the importance of conversation—that art of human communication which we encourage here at BTF, and which some of us may find ourselves a little out of practice with these days. Sherry is a psychologist, sociologist, and professor at MIT, and I first learned about her work after reading a recent article in The Atlantic magazine. The article, written by Megan Garber, highlights Sherry's work over the past 15 years involving...
