Every once in a while, we are treated with the opportunity to appreciate each other. Something happens that is significant enough to jolt us from our routine and really reflect on the goodness of others.

I got such an opportunity last week when someone tried to steal my bicycle from where I’d left it locked up on a busy sidewalk. I’d left the bike one store down from where I was working, since there was no bike stand outside my work. For the first couple of hours, I stepped outside to check on it. But as the day wore on and I got busy, I forgot about the bike.

When work was over and it was time to go home, I remember thinking, “What if my bike is gone?” It was just a thought; I believed that it would be right where I left it.

It turned out to be more premonition than just random thought, because when I looked down the sidewalk to where my bike should have been, I saw an empty bike stand. My breath caught in my throat, and I thought, “No friggin’ way,” but even then I thought there must be some explanation.

As I approached the bike stand, I saw there was a hot pink piece of paper taped to it. My heart began to beat a little slower. The writing on the paper read:

“We have what you’re looking for. Please come inside Papersource.” And there was a little heart drawn underneath the words. I was confused, but I just figured they’d decided to bring my bike inside because they worried someone had forgotten it.

As I would soon learn, that was not the case. Earlier in the day, around 2pm, Jacquelyn, one of the supervisors at Papersource, had witnessed a man walk up to my bike, look around, pull out a pair of wire cutters, and proceed to cut the lock off my bike. He would have been on his merry, thieving way at that point, had Jacquelyn not taken it upon herself to march outside and scare him off.

She followed this up by calling the police, filing a police report complete with what I am told was a very good description of the thief, and locking my bike up in the back of the store so that I wouldn’t have to pay the fees the police station would charge me to retrieve my bike.

She did all of this for a stranger. When I learned what had happened and what Jacquelyn had done for me, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. I was shocked that someone had tried to take my bike, and in broad daylight at such a busy time of day, but that feeling was overshadowed by my appreciation for the kindness and bravery Jacquelyn had shown on my behalf.

I stopped by Papersource later in the week to drop off a thank you gift for Jacquelyn. I wanted to show my appreciation, but more than that, I wanted her to know how special she was for what she’d done. There are too few times we go out of our way to help family and friends, let alone strangers. Jacquelyn’s actions reminded me of the goodness we are capable of, and the impact that goodness can have on others. We’re all in this together, after all; we might as well stop and remind each other every once in a while.
