If you were to read my byline on Medium, a writing website, you’d see that it includes the description “addicted to being inspired and inspiring others.” I wrote those words more than a year ago, long before I felt like I’d done anything remotely inspiring. The truth is, back then I was still using language like “if I make this bold decision,” or “maybe I’ll make a drastic change.” I was spending a lot of time reading other people’s inspirational stories and being inspired, but I wasn’t making any commitments of my own. I was still too scared to inspire myself into action, let alone anyone else.

But when I finally started taking action and making changes, something happened. Not only did I begin to gain a little more confidence in my ability to take charge of my own life, but also people around me started to pay attention. An idea began to take form in their minds, the idea that maybe they could make changes too. They started to think that maybe they weren’t as stuck as they’d thought.

A friend recently told me that my decision to leave my job—my career, really—and break off in an entirely new direction inspired her to make a bold decision of her own. I knew that she’d been unhappy in her job for a long time, but for various reasons, she didn’t think she had the luxury of being picky. The more we talked and the more she read our blog posts, the more she started to wonder if maybe she wasn’t quite as stuck as she thought. She may not be able to get exactly what she wanted—not right away—but she realized that she did have a choice in whether she stayed or not. She made the decision to leave, for which I happily congratulated her, not realizing that I’d helped her make the decision. When she told me that I’d inspired her, I felt both invigorated in the choices I was making and thankful to have had the opportunity to give her the shove she needed.

My experience with my friend taught me something about inspiration: that it works in a sort of circle. You know the saying, “What goes around comes around,” or "What you put out into the world always comes back"? That’s how I see inspiration. You can be inspired by the words or actions of others, and in turn, the actions you take or the choices you make have the power to inspire others. Knowing that something you did inspired another person encourages you to keep doing what you are doing, to keep making brave decisions and bold changes.

We all have different decisions to make in our lives, different changes we want to make, but no matter how small or seemingly trivial, they will be bold and they will be brave. Because choosing to create change is hard, and it’s scary too. It takes a great deal of guts and optimism. You have to hope for the best, because fearing the worst will only prevent you from taking action. But when you do, your actions will inspire those around you, and no matter whether you succeed or fail, you will know it was worth it.
