There is something Universal about us humans,  something that unites us beyond anything else. No, it is not gratitude, unfortunately, but it is the fact that everyone wants to be happy,  in that, we are in this together.  How we define happiness might be different,  but just thinking that we all want the same thing, is something that already unites us.  There is a big connection between being happy and being grateful, it is not happiness that makes us grateful, it is the other way around, being grateful makes us happy.

A few days ago I received an email from a friend of mine regarding a show of gratitude.   She told me about an opportunity that Marshall Goldsmith was putting out there. Marshall Goldsmith is THE GURU when it comes to executive coaching, he works with CEOs of multimillion dollar companies,  he has developed a coaching process to whom thousands of coaches adhere to, including me.   He wants to leave a legacy; he is willing to coach and groom 15 coaches worldwide, for free, personally.  The only requirement is that those selected will have to do the same when their time comes.

I thought about this for a while, and I realized that his approach is awesome.  In my line of business, I think of helping one person at the time, one client at a time.  During my career, I might help a few individuals, and many others will probably benefit from the changes that my clients undergo.  However, the idea of helping others to do what I do was not even on my radar.  And I thought this is a great way to make sure I keep helping people beyond my working years, a great way to show gratitude.

He called this a way to give back and honor all the people that have helped him in a way or another during his life.  So I thought, about the people and situations that have helped me to get where I am today.  I am here today because I had had lots of help. I am grateful for my first-grade teacher that spanked me every day, so I remember to wash my hands and to the boarding school teachers that forced me to make my bed every day.  Grateful for a wonderful scholarship program that allowed me to escape a war-torn country and start a new life in the US.  I am grateful to the Brain Surgeon that gave me a second chance to living when he removed my tumor.  I am grateful to the wonderful friend that gave me an opportunity to start a new career in the Middle East without any experience whatsoever. And to my first wife, who put me on the path to happiness, the day she left.  To my new family that is giving me the biggest reason to keep healthy and do what I do.    I have lots to be thankful for, and it is part of my bucket list to return the favor in some capacity.

Once in a while, we have to go thru something tough, and when this difficult thing occurs to us, it is hard to be thankful and grateful.  But it's  an opportunity, an opportunity to learn something which is painful. But that something that you learned, can help others.  Learning opportunities are everywhere, what you do with that knowledge might show how grateful you are.  You can go thru it and move on, or learn and then pass it to others so they can benefit and conquer the mountain you have conquered.

Being happy is a universal desire, being grateful is a universal opportunity.  Go ahead, look for opportunities of being grateful and to give back in any way yo can.   Leaving a legacy built on gratefulness is something we all should aspire to do, I know I will.
