This past Sunday morning I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock. It was 6:30 AM, and I quickly pressed the snooze button before the alarm could wake my sleeping baby in the next room. I wasn’t feeling all that good, and I considered sending a text to bail out of my plans to go biking with a few friends. I wasn't feeling motivated, and the idea of going back to sleep was very inviting. But I thought about the fact that my friends were counting on me to be there and ride with them, and that was strong enough motivation to get me going. Instead of canceling and going back to sleep,  I slowly got out of bed and got dressed in my biking clothes. My waiting friends were an accountability factor I could not ignore.

We rode about 3 ½ hours, and then we had breakfast. On my way home, I thought about how good it felt to be sore, and I was so glad I had decided to follow through and get my butt up to meet my biking friends. The knowledge that my friends were counting on me to show up was strong motivation to follow through. If I'd made plans to ride alone, I most definitely would have bagged the bike ride, reset the alarm clock, and tried to get some more zzz’s.

I am reminded once again of what my dad used to say: “Tell me who you are hanging out with and I will tell you who you are." At the time, though I understood the words, I didn’t completely grasp the concept. Now I understand his meaning. Life is too short to do things alone. We need to have a support system that inspires us to be better, to do right, and that will help us on this journey. Friends are an incredible source of inspiration, and whether we like it or not, tramadol order line influence.

My friends are indeed a source of inspiration for me, and they keep me accountable. We really need our friends more than they need us, and because they are a big source of influence, it is very important to pick the right ones. We must befriend people who will inspire us to become better.

I think the same can be said of any bad habit. We tend to assume the habits of our closest friends, good or bad. Which means that good habits, like healthy eating and physical activity, are also contagious. If we choose friends who reinforce the good habits we want to have, we're more likely to maintain those good habits.

Not only will your friends influence you to become better, but they'll also actively inspire you to make the right choices. Research shows that if you surround yourself with strong-willed friends, chances are you'll have better self-control. “Self-control, by its name and definition, is a ‘self’ process — something that we do alone, as individuals,” the study points out. “Yet, when we order food on a menu or go to work, we’re often surrounded by other people.” And they will influence our choices tremendously. Having someone strong-willed by our side can make the difference in how we make decisions.

At breakfast after our bike ride, I salivated at the thought of ordering a piece of the coffee cake the restaurant is famous for. But the healthy choices my friends were making inspired me to pass. My friends not only influenced me to get up and go riding with them, but they also influenced the food I ended up ordering at breakfast. It was a healthy breakfast. Remember, surround yourself with people who inspire and elevate you.
